The voice of stripes is a sound installation created in collaboration with Jinjo Ma. It was presented in The Poetics of Knowledge: The Sound of Fashion, a Fashion and Textiles Research exhibition at the Royal College of Art (RCA). The work approaches stripes as a visual and sonic notation: their intervals, repetitions, rhythm, movement, and proportion suggest ways of hearing, turning a printed surface into a sound situation in which looking and listening continuously overlap.
A stripe begins with a line, and a line with a point that leaves a trace. As these traces accumulate through movement and experience, each person makes a pattern that cannot be repeated by another. The work approaches stripes as a graphic score and an algorithmic composition: a record of direction, difference, and personality.
A fixed line can appear to move as a listener changes position, much like a musical phrase unfolds over time. A vibration speaker lets the printed polyvinyl display act as an ambient sound source, while an ultrasonic speaker creates a focused listening point. Moving between these two conditions, the audience experiences the garment and composition as connected performances.

작품은 점이 선이 되고, 선이 하나의 궤적이 되는 과정에서 출발한다. 서로 다른 이동과 경험은 결코 동일하지 않은 패턴을 만들며, 이 축적된 흔적은 각자의 개성을 기록한다. 여기서 스트라이프는 방향과 차이, 시간을 기록하는 그래픽 스코어이자 알고리즘 작곡의 구조가 된다.
관객의 신체는 감상의 바깥에 머물지 않는다. 진동 스피커는 인쇄된 폴리비닐 표면을 공명체로 바꾸어 공간에 퍼지는 소리를 만들고, 초음파 스피커는 특정 위치에서만 소리가 선명해지는 집중된 청취 지점을 형성한다. 관객은 두 청취 방식 사이를 이동하며, 의상처럼 전시된 표면과 시간 속에서 전개되는 작곡을 동시에 경험한다. 이때 관람은 바라봄과 들음, 거리와 위치를 스스로 선택하는 참여의 행위가 된다.
This demonstration traces the translation of striped garment patterns into sound. Each stripe is read as a set of data — interval, density, direction, duration, and repetition — then passed through an algorithmic composition system to generate a corresponding sonic event. Rather than illustrating the pattern, the work treats the garment as a score: its visual structure becomes a set of instructions for listening.
이 데모는 의복의 스트라이프 패턴이 소리로 변환되는 과정을 보여 준다. 각 스트라이프는 간격, 밀도, 방향, 지속 시간, 반복이라는 데이터로 읽히고, 알고리즘 작곡 시스템을 거쳐 대응하는 음향 사건으로 생성된다. 작품은 패턴을 단순히 시각화하는 대신 의복을 하나의 스코어로 다루며, 시각적 구조를 청취를 위한 지시 체계로 바꾼다.
